ICOY Crane safety at the highest level
A challenge achieved with Artificial Intelligence
INDUSTRY
The client
Our customer is a major Italian steel industry, present in Ravenna with a plant that employs almost 1,200 people and covers an area of over 540,000 square metres, where steel coils arrive by sea on the plant’s port quay and are transformed into finished products through the various processing stages of its various production facilities.
The challenge
For our client, the theme of improving safety standards has always been at the centre of their strategies, but the tools and systems offered by the technology market, together with the critical nature of the industrial environment, had never given satisfactory results due to the presence of ferrous materials, heat sources, radio interference, etc… Our client provided us with the opportunity to measure ourselves against this difficult technological challenge in order to design and supply solutions capable of increasing safety in the workplace, preventing accidents and defining safety strategies through the collection of data useful for training personnel.
The solution
Our patented and certified solutions, ICOY Crane and ICOY Mover, are designed and developed in order to immediately warn operators of people entering a predefined danger area either near moving vehicles such as forklifts, bulldozers, mechanical shovels, Stackers or in the areas underneath the loading of a crane.
ICOY effectively overcame the objective limitations of the technologies previously used by the customer. The choice was to adopt ICOY AI intelligent agent image analysis, already used in many areas, but never before used in an industrial context for accident prevention.
The benefits
During the first few days of the activation of the first ICOY Crane on the overhead crane, it was possible to record more than 2,700 ‘potential’ danger events through the logs generated by the safety perimeter invasion alarms under the hook with the load. Today, four more ICOY Cranes have been installed. The change in the spontaneous behaviour of personnel following the sounding of the audible alarms, generated by ICOY, together with the information and training programme implemented by the company, have led to a significant reduction in violations. The reduction in alarm events is 94-95% (from 900 events per day to 40-50). On the other hand, if we consider people staying in the alarm area for more than 5 seconds, we are at 2-3 events per day.
