The client
Our client is an Italian company operating in the metallurgy, iron and steel, IT and engineering sectors. Through subsidiaries and investee companies in Italy and abroad, it specialises in the processing and distribution of steels (stainless, low alloy and carbon) destined mainly for the food, construction, household, household appliance, energy and basic steel and mechanical industries.
The challenge
For our customer, the health and safety of workers is a business objective of equal importance as product quality and business success. Occupational safety and health protection are an integral part of all operating procedures and are included in technical, economic and social considerations right from the planning stage. Every employee promotes safety and health protection in his or her working environment and observes the relevant regulations.
All management personnel are obliged to instruct and support their employees in the performance of this task, ensuring adequate and continuous training and providing the necessary protective equipment. Our client provided us with the opportunity to deal with a large group in order to secure with artificial intelligence a first overhead crane at their plant in Northern Italy.
The solution
Our ICOY Crane solution obtained Italian Patent N 102020000016051 overcoming the objective limitations of technologies used to date such as Infrared, Bluetooth or Radio Frequency based motion detection applications and systems. The customer decided on security perimeters delimiting the areas under the overhead crane that were not to be crossed by personnel. Our solution even warns the operator by just seeing the tip of a finger so the operator can stop the machine and avoid risks. All the information material collected by the intelligent agents positioned on the overhead crane helped the staff correct some movements and improve safety routes in the storage and loading/unloading areas.
The benefits
Accidents can happen when distracted and unaware workers are not aware that they are in the manoeuvring area of lifting equipment and often the hook or suspended load obscures the view of the crane operator. We are talking, for example, about workers who find themselves in very noisy and poorly lit environments (such as steel mills, foundries, heavy industry, …) and who may be walking around with earplugs or noise muffs and may not hear, perceive or see the arrival of the crane. Thanks to the ICOY Crane also being equipped with clear and visible signal light perimeters, it is possible to avoid passing through the manoeuvring areas of overhead cranes with a considerable improvement in working practices.
